| History of The L. A .
Cruiser's
In 1995 a couple of “car guys”, Cliff Eiland
and Brett Ballard, got together to form a car club. They came
up with a name, The L. A. Cruiser’s, for Lower Alabama.
Our first show was also in ’95, at the time it was called
“Old Home Folks Days”, now Opp Fest. We have been
and will always be about the promotion and preservation of
classic automobiles. Make and model has never been important,
we love them all, and welcome anyone who feels the same way.
There are no fees, no organized meetings, and no officers.
The club is discussing a $25 a year membership fee to help
with expenses, let us know what you think. We are a small
group with only six active members, but blessed with great
family members that help us put on our shows! We raise money
with our car shows and fund raisers. Last year we sold chances
on a 330hp 350 Crate Motor that we gave away at Opp Fest.
In ’05 we are selling tickets to give away $1,000 cash,
tickets are only $1. We have two shows per year, The Rattlesnake
Rodeo and Opp Fest. You can go to our links section for more
info on the Rodeo. Opp Fest is held the last Saturday of October
each year. The Rattlesnake Rodeo just celebrated its 45th
year! This year will the 8th Opp Fest. The 2004 Opp Fest show
produced 111 entrants from all over the Southeast. This year’s
Opp Fest will be October 29th. Year models, all ‘60
to ‘70 cars are judged together, and the same for trucks
separate our classes. We try to give out at least 75 trophies
and 125 grab bags. We have lots of door prizes, a 50/50 drawing,
and specialty trophies. Specialty trophies consist of Best
Engine, Best Paint, Long Distance Award, Club Participation,
and of course, Best of Show.
To purchase tickets on the $1,000 send us a check for the
desired number of tickets to Cliff Eiland, 102 Prospect St.,
Opp, Alabama, 36467.
Our members have had a wide variety of autos. This includes
muscle cars, Model T’s, T-buckets, street rods, trucks,
newer cars, drag cars, and even a Morris-Minor. So as you
can see, we are an open club, if cars are your passion, we
would love to have you! Current members own a wide variety
also. Brothers Brett and Brock Ballard own several….
a ’67 Chevelle that runs 6.90’s in the 1/8, a
’66 GMC pick-up that their grandfather bought new. She
currently has 67k on the odometer. Brock is in his third year
of a frame off restoration on his ’69 Camaro, he is
getting close. Brett has to many projects, a couple of Chevy
II’s, and his baby, a ’65 GMC Suburban. The Suburban
was a rescue squad support vehicle, stored indoors her entire
life with 63k miles and virtually rust free! Cliff has a ’93
Caprice that has a lot of cool retro looks, and sold Brett
the ‘Burb. He has owned to many to list here! Donald
Burleson has a couple of ’69 Mustangs, his daughter
drives one to high school, cool! Harrison Hughes owns a fine
’31 Dodge street rod, an older restoration that he has
maintained in excellent condition. Jamie Register has two
’68 Chevy Pick-ups, one that is show ready, and one
in restoration.
